My design work is inspired by traditional print design as well as the most contemporary approaches. Of course, I always attempt to design in such a way that supports what is being presented rather than let style trump substance. Stylistically speaking, I am strongly influenced by mid-20th-century typography as well as the fine typography seen 200 years ago.

Client: The Tennessee Four

Role: Designer (Creative Director: DJ Smith, Talstone Group)

The Tennessee Four is a group of four singers with a unique blend of carefully arranged vocal harmonies. They do family-friendly events and concerts, singing oldies and new tunes a capella (without instruments) or with their band.

Since The Tennessee Four's style is so hard to pin down (don't ever call them doo-wop or barbershop!), and they have a somewhat older (ie: not teen-aged) audience, so a completely unique visual style was needed to showcase the band's music and performance schedule. Since the genere they maybe sorta kinda even come close to is country, something of a contemporary country approach was used in the design, but not quite even that. My creative director tasked me with developing something different from everything else, so I came up with a contemporary blue and tan theme with a clean and classy feel that is just funky enough that it looks different but won't scare people off. The result is something that should appeal to their audience and encourage them to participate and interact with the boys on a regular basis, ranging from the "Chatterbox" - a blog for one of the singers, a fan club where fans can leave comments, a calendar of upcoming events powered by Upcoming.org, and of course pages for buying their music and booking events.
