Portfolio

My design work is inspired by traditional print design as well as the most contemporary approaches. Of course, I always attempt to design in such a way that supports what is being presented rather than let style trump substance. Stylistically speaking, I am strongly influenced by mid-20th-century typography as well as the fine typography seen 200 years ago.

2009 Exhibitor and Advertiser Prospectus for Barbershop Harmony Society

2009 Exhibitor and Advertiser Prospectus

Client: Barbershop Harmony Society

Role: Designer (Creative Director: DJ Smith, Talstone Group)

The Barbershop Harmony Society is an organization that "brings men together in harmony and fellowship to enrich lives through singing." They have several conventions a year in various places, and the biggest one is in the summer, replete with a showroom floor and big international championships. It's over-the-top showmanship at its best.

The 2009 International Convention was held in Anaheim, California, and it needed a brochure for prospective exhibitors and advertisers. I wanted to create something of a California feel without getting too stereotyped or looking too hokey. Fortunately we had some great images available from the Anaheim/Orange County Convention and Visitors Bureau, so I went with a great photo of a classic woody-style car with a surfboard sticking out the back window, gave it a slick treatment, and integrated that with some clean typography. The pre-existing logo dictated the colors, but I didn't think the typeface would work in the body text. So I maximized the colors and used a complementary type family, which turns out to be great for displaying all the client-supplied information inside the prospectus.
